Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen to Deliver Opening Keynote at AMIA 2025 Annual Conference

AMIA is honored to welcome Robert R. Newlen, Acting Librarian of Congress, to deliver the Opening Keynote at the AMIA 2025 on December 3.

With a distinguished career spanning more than four decades at the Library of Congress, Newlen has held leadership roles across the institution, including Interim Director of the Congressional Research Service and Deputy Librarian of Congress. In 2025, he became Acting Librarian of Congress, where he continues to champion public access, institutional transparency, service to the U.S. Congress, and the stewardship of the nation’s cultural record.

“Robert Newlen’s leadership at the Library of Congress reflects a profound commitment to both public service and cultural stewardship,” said Mike Mashon, President of AMIA. “As our field navigates rapid technological and social change, his perspective on the role of national institutions, collaboration, and public trust could not be more timely. We are excited to welcome him as our Opening Keynote speaker.”

Newlen’s keynote will explore the Library of Congress’s role in preserving the nation’s collective memory amid a rapidly evolving landscape. Highlighting the importance of cultural stewardship, collaboration, and strengthening public trust, he will underscore how the Library’s efforts to champion the significance of media collections—and the importance of preserving them—help ensure that the stories that shape our national identity remain accessible for generations to come.
