AMIA 2023: Call for Proposals

The AMIA Conference Committee invites proposal submissions for sessions, posters, and workshops for the AMIA Annual Conference to be held November 15-17 in Tulsa.

The Conference Committee works to present a broad-based program that speaks to a wide range of attendees with a balance of theory and practice, inviting new ideas and concepts that stimulate additional interest, involvement, and educational benefit. In keeping with our goals to be inclusive, we urge proposers to use AMIA Conference sessions as an opportunity to include new voices and offer diverse viewpoints.

We encourage you to read the Call for Proposals Notes and FAQ which explain the review process and offers information and tips on what the reviewers and the Conference Committee consider in the proposal process. You can contact our Proposal Help Desk with any questions throughout the process.

The Committee has created a Google spreadsheet to connect individuals seeking ideas and/or collaborators for session and workshop proposals. The spreadsheet is provided as a means of communication only: the Committee does not monitor the document and it is not part of the official submission process.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the AMIA Small Gauge Symposium (2001) and the centennials for 9.5mm and 16mm film, the Small Gauge and Amateur Film Committee is excited to host a celebratory symposium as part of the 2023 annual AMIA conference. The symposium will take stock of accomplishments within our subfield over the last two decades, spotlight and examine current issues and concerns, and help determine priorities and directions for the near- and long-term future. Archivists, technicians, artists, scholars, researchers, and students alike are welcome to submit proposals for presentations, panels, roundtables, screenings, workshops, or demonstrations related to small gauge and amateur film. Co-organized by the SGAF co-chairs, Hugo Ljungbäck, Louisa Trott, and Patricia Ledesma Villon. The proposal form will have an option to propose a session for the symposium.

In addition to the symposium, the conference will include a program stream with a focus on communities under fire. Many already marginalized communities have come under fire as legislation sweeps the country, hate crimes rise, and dangerous rhetoric is all-too-commonplace. The conference stream, Amplifying Voices: Communities Under Fire, is intended to highlight and give voice to the work of archives and community activists ensuring the histories of these communities are collected and preserved. We are seeking proposals that focus on work being done to collect these stories, to advocate, and to amplify these voices.

We understand that organizations and individuals are still at different stages of returning to conference travel, recognizing both the ongoing health concerns and economic environment. As a non-profit, membership-driven organization, we also want to be as transparent as possible about the financial impact of holding an in person conference in this evolving environment. We do ask for those submitting a conference proposal to be fully committed to being part of the event through conference registration, travel and/or accommodations at our conference hotel or any combo of this, on acceptance of your conference proposal. Keeping in mind our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we will do our best to honor and accommodate requests from those wishing to participate in the conference, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
